This Weekend In NYC ... Black Girls Rock



The 4th Annual Black Girls Rock! Awards were held Saturday, October 17 in New York City. Hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, honorees included poet/activist/playwright Dr. Sonia Sanchez, who was awarded "Living Legend"honors; Naomi Campbell accepted a "Fashionista" award; Janelle Monae received "Who's Got Next"recognition, ;Doug E. Fresh and Def Leopard guitarist Phil Collen presented Queen Latifah with the "Rock Star" Award; and Catherine Malandrino honored Mary J. Blige by introducing her as the 2009 Black Girls Rock! "Icon" Award recipient. Doug E. also performed his own hits, while Janelle Monae closed the show with a performance of her song "Sincerely Jane."



The good times were all in the name of a good cause. Mr. & Mrs. RJ Masi of RJ Masi World Construction and Interior Design (they have a new show on HGTV about "green" building) donated $25,000 to the Black Girls Rock! Inc. foundation (founded by celebrity DJ Beverly Bond), which was later matched by another $25,000 donation from Queen Latifah.
