This Weekend In NYC ... Black Girls Rock
The 4th Annual Black Girls Rock! Awards were held Saturday, October 17 in New York City. Hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, honorees included poet/activist/playwright Dr. Sonia Sanchez, who was awarded "Living Legend"honors; Naomi Campbell accepted a "Fashionista" award; Janelle Monae received "Who's Got Next"recognition, ;Doug E. Fresh and Def Leopard guitarist Phil Collen presented Queen Latifah with the "Rock Star" Award; and Catherine Malandrino honored Mary J. Blige by introducing her as the 2009 Black Girls Rock! "Icon" Award recipient. Doug E. also performed his own hits, while Janelle Monae closed the show with a performance of her song "Sincerely Jane."
The good times were all in the name of a good cause. Mr. & Mrs. RJ Masi of RJ Masi World Construction and Interior Design (they have a new show on HGTV about "green" building) donated $25,000 to the Black Girls Rock! Inc. foundation (founded by celebrity DJ Beverly Bond), which was later matched by another $25,000 donation from Queen Latifah.

The Evolution of White Lines... The Get Busy Committee "My Little Razor Blade"
Gotta love folks who will just give it to you like they really feel. In ya face beotch.
The Get Busy Committee is Ryu (Styles of Beyond, Fort Minor), Apathy (Demigodz, Army of the Pharaohs) and super-producer Scoop Deville. Their debut album, Uzi Does It, will be released for pre-sale album download on October 27th at www.getbusycommittee.com and available on iTunes and other outlets on November 10th.
From their press release:
The record is being released on their own label, Tokyo Sex Whale Records. Ryu was once signed to Warner Brothers and Apathy to Atlantic. No offense to the A&R rep who thinks phrases like, "I think you should work on your skateboard skills" or "you should go to the gym so you can take your shirt off on stage" is career advice, but Get Busy Committee decided to eschew label interest this time around and go their own route. "We can fuck it up ourselves, thanks," they were heard to say. So, Uzi Does It became a 100% self-funded, self-released independent record.
Wow.
And they even incorporated the UZI into a USB format to distribute the album. Download "My Little Razor Blade" and "Chillin' Out Maxin'" below.

Ryan Leslie Makes Another Album
I love his music and I hate this album cover. Not sure if he's trying to distract us from his nose or what but uhhh. No likey.

Art On Trial
In case you haven't been keeping up with the copywrite battle between Obama "HOPE" poster artist Shepherd Fairey and the Associated Press, you might want to start paying attention. Fairey recently admitted to lying about which AP image he used to create the famed poster, which will potentially ruin his chances to claim "fair use" in the copywrite dispute. Check up on the latest HERE.
But uh, is it fair for the AP to be writing stories about cases they're involved in? Just sayin'.
Then I Spent 400 Bucks on This...
Well...maybe a lil more than that. From time to time I come across a car design that makes me stop and say "cotdamn I gotta get one of these!" The Mercedes-Benz 300SL-inspired "Gullwing" SLS AMG is DEFINITELY one of them. The 6.3-liter V8 produces 563 hp and goes from 0-60 in a Usain Bolt-like 3.7 seconds. So for all you Ricky Bobby's out there that just wanna "go fast" this car is a reason to get your 1s up. MSRP will be well over 180k.
Listen To This: Rob Jay "Director's Chair"
A homie of mine recently put me up on an up and coming artist named Rob Jay from Houston. The 1st record I heard was this lil diddy called "Director's Chair" and I dig it. Coming Attractions: Souls of Mischief @ CMJ
There's a good reason why Souls of Mischief will probably be around from "'93 Til Infinity". They still deliver a great live show and they've been making good money on the road and making music independently since their debut years ago. If you're in NYC for CMJ don't miss them or the rest of the dope Audible Treats lineup!
Who is That Girl: Nneka
Decon just put me up on a new singer (who is a member of the blessed family of big haired folks) Nneka. Her album CONCRETE JUNGLE is due out on Yo Mama/Decon/Epic, February 2, 2010. You can hear her song "The Uncomfortable Truth" HERE.
Sounds like homegirl has been at it for awhile, her first album Victim of Truth (released in the UK in 2007) met with plenty of praise by the British media. (‘As good as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ said UK’s The Sunday Times). Her second release, No Longer At Ease, landed her on tour with Lenny Kravitz.
Nneka’s first US release, Concrete Jungle, stands as an offering of love, hope and optimism dedicated to the people of Warri & the Niger Delta of Nigeria. Holding it all together is the emotional focus of her beautiful voice, located in a place somewhere between yearning and rage.
Nneka fans number in the hundreds of thousands across two continents, as she divides her time between homes in Lagos and Hamburg, Germany. She's now set to tour the U.S. so make sure you check for her. Dates are below.
November Tour Dates:
Monday, 11/9 - New York, NY - Joe’s Pub
Tuesday, 11/10 - New York, NY - Highline Ballroom w/ The Roots
Thursday, 11/12 - Boston, MA - Café 939
Friday, 11/13 - Philadelphia, PA - World Café Live
Saturday, 11/14 - Vienna, VA - Jammin’ Java
Tuesday, 11/17 - New York, NY - Highline Ballroom
Thursday, 11/19 - Santa Monica, CA - Zanzibar
Friday, 11/20 - San Francisco, CA - Café Du Nord
I stumbled on this old video of her too in case your curiosity is piqued.

BET Awards: B.O.B. For Rookie of The Year
B.O.B. is my favorite to win in the Rookie of the Year category -- he's nominated along with Dorrough, Wale, Drake and Kid Cudi. Of course Drake is the favorite in the category, but I thought it was an interesting gesture for BET to nominate B.O.B. when he's been an outspoken critic of the whole "Patron and Swag" movement (that BET loves so much). I interviewed the rapper also known as Bobby Ray a few weeks ago when his nomination was announced and asked him to address the irony. Here is what he had to say.
I’ve always been this I’m gonna be different, stand alone [artist] but after awhile you have to learn how to keep your soul but still operate in the system. You got to be in the system but not of it. When it really starts picking up and you start entering mainstream America and becoming a household name which I’m just starting to, now it’s even more of a challenge to stay true to my nature. It’s one thing when you have an intention to be different and it’s another when you are naturally different, so in order to be myself and stay sane I just have to be me, which will stand out naturally.
Love that kid. Good luck today B.O.B.

I soooo want to like them, this video is getting me closer to it, but I think I'm still waiting for a song I truly connect to. I'm not all the way sold on this one yet, but just when I was ready to write it off as the same old straight to DVD hood/rapper flick something about the trailer pulled me in. A3C Day 3: More Pictures!
So Saturday was the last night of A3C so I had to go show love to my homie DV One! As you know I post his mixes here regularly, but since he's in Seattle I rarely see him. He and the Big Tune team (Jake One, J.Moore, Vitamin D) were over at The Earl in East Atlanta hosting Red Bull Big Tune: A3C All Star Edition feat. Battle Cat, 9th Wonder, Diamond D & DJ Premier so I stopped by to soak up the beats that provide the backbone of hip-hop music.
I ran into Dow and Henny of Tha Bizness while I was over there. I also caught sight of Maestro in the crowd. The vibe over at the Earl was completely different than over at Five Spot, in the fact that every single audience member was totally focused on what the men onstage were doing. The energy in there was amazing, it was the stuff producer hard-ons are made of.
In case you didn't know, Tha Bizness are also from Seattle and DV and Dow are close like brothers (Henny and Dow are cousins) and their cousin Jay Berry, who is also a songwriter/producer, was also in the house. So it was truly a family affair. I couldn't stay long because I wanted to try and see Rakim at Ice House, so I left after staying for most of Premier's set.
And I arrived at Ice House just as Evil Dee, Walt, DJ Bazarro, Wayne Ski and more of my NY peoples were leaving. They tried their best to get me and Jah in but the spot was at capacity so we opted to head back to Five Spot in time to see Diz Gibran, U-N-I, J.Cole and Bobby Creekwater.

A3C Day 1: Spree Wilson "Dreamworld" Live at 529
Love the lighting. Spree is one of my faves to watch live because he's so chill normally but he just becomes this ball of energy onstage.
A3C Day 2: Perfect Attendance Curren$y Live at Five Spot
More videos coming soon!!! Enjoy. JETS :)
Last Night ... In Atlanta: A3C Perfect Attendance
Here's a few flicks, YouTube is not being my friend right now so video will have to wait.
Hands down, best moment so far this weekend for me was watching Curren$y shut it down and then chopping it up with him, only to learn that his SOHH interview w/ yours truly was his first and that it helped him realize he had an audience after leaving Young Money.
Two of the best writers in hip-hop Trent Clark of The Smoking Section and Maurice Garland
TC and fellow TSS writer Marshall Zigler aka MZ -- aka Quiet Storm, cuz in my couple days worth of observation he's a man of few words, but he will catch you slippin with the unexpected cracks.
Okay, let me just say that I've known Naledge (who I actually call Jabari!) since he signed to Rawkus in like '05/'06 -- so I have watched him grow from a skinny little kid with lyrics, to this big brawny hip-hop cat. Shawty got thick! I likes I likes... but yeah I'm sure none of ya'll care much about that. Joe Scudda is the new homie -- I'm loving the beard. I had to give him a hard time about the random white chick on his tee and he was a good sport.
Looking forward to seeing Diz Gibran J.Cole and El Prez rip it tonight. Also gotta spend some time with the Seattle homies DV One, J. Moore, Vitamin D and Jake One over at the Earl tonight -- they're doing Red Bull Big Tune with Premier, Battlecat, 9th Wonder and hella folks.
